Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Womb 2 Grow Wellness different from a regular dentist or orthodontist?

Traditional dentistry focuses on teeth — cleaning them, filling them, straightening them. At Womb 2 Grow Wellness, we go much deeper. We look at the whole person — how they breathe, sleep, chew, swallow, grow, and function — and we ask why problems are happening, not just what to do about them. Our root-cause approach means we identify and address the structural, functional, and neurological patterns that drive dental and developmental challenges in the first place. Traditional braces straighten teeth. Our approach guides the growth of the face, jaw, and airway so the body develops the way it was designed to — and those results last a lifetime.

We treat everyone — from pregnant moms and newborns all the way through adulthood. Airway challenges, restricted oral tissues, jaw dysfunction, sleep-disordered breathing, and the effects of untreated tongue ties don’t disappear with age. They follow people through childhood, adolescence, and into their adult years — often showing up as chronic fatigue, jaw pain, snoring, anxiety, or persistent orthodontic relapse. If you’ve been told your issues are “just how you are,” you’re in the right place. It is never too late to address the root cause.

Everyone across every stage of life can benefit. Pregnant moms benefit from airway support, sleep-disordered breathing management during pregnancy, and oral function optimization before baby arrives. Newborns and infants benefit from support for breastfeeding difficulties, poor latch, tongue tie and lip tie, and early airway development. Toddlers benefit from oral function and growth guidance as they transition beyond breastfeeding. Children and adolescents benefit from airway development, facial growth guidance, myofunctional therapy, frenectomy, and biomimetic appliances. Young adults and adults benefit from treatment for unresolved airway issues, TMJ dysfunction, snoring, sleep apnea, myofunctional therapy, cosmetic laser procedures, and growth guidance appliances. The earlier we intervene, the greater the impact — but meaningful change is possible at any age.

In infants and young children: difficulty latching or breastfeeding, clicking or popping sounds while feeding, gassiness, colic or reflux, mouth breathing, snoring, restless sleep, slow weight gain, and open mouth posture. In older children and adolescents: crowded or crooked teeth, a narrow or high-arched palate, mouth breathing, snoring, grinding teeth, bedwetting, behavioral concerns that resemble ADHD, poor focus or concentration, speech delays, picky eating, fatigue, and frequent ear infections. In adults: snoring, sleep apnea, jaw pain or clicking, chronic headaches or migraines, forward head posture, chronic fatigue, teeth grinding, orthodontic relapse after braces, persistent tongue tie symptoms, and difficulty breathing through the nose. If any of these resonate, a comprehensive evaluation is the right next step.

The earlier the better — but it is truly never too late. Eighty percent of facial development is complete by age 5, and 90% by age 12, which means the window for guiding growth most effectively is during early childhood. We encourage families to bring infants in within the first few weeks of life if there are any feeding difficulties, and ideally by 6–12 months regardless. That said, we see meaningful results in adolescents, young adults, and adults every day. If something doesn’t feel right — in yourself or your child — trust that instinct and reach out.

The Comprehensive Assessment is a thorough oral health physical appropriate for all ages. It evaluates breathing, bite, sleep patterns, feeding history, oral habits, and overall dental health — and results in a personalized care plan. The GHF 2-Hour Diagnostic Assessment is our most in-depth evaluation, designed for patients with complex airway, growth, or developmental concerns. It includes a full myofunctional assessment of soft tissue and muscle function, a detailed craniofacial structural evaluation, digital imaging, and may include an at-home sleep screening device to monitor oxygen desaturation and heart rate variability overnight. All data is analyzed by our doctors, and approximately two weeks later you’ll have a 1-hour virtual consultation with Dr. Dean-Duru and our treatment coordinator to review findings and map out your personalized care plan. If you’re not sure which is right for your family, our team will guide you during your discovery call.

Our treatments span the full spectrum of airway, developmental, and functional health — and for adults, cosmetic wellness as well. For all ages: orofacial myofunctional therapy, BabyLase and Oralase non-surgical laser therapy, dual-wavelength laser frenectomy for tongue tie and lip tie, advanced 3D CBCT imaging and diagnostics, home sleep screening studies, nutritional guidance, and collaboration with allied health providers. For children and adolescents: biomimetic growth guidance appliances (ALF, Myobrace, MyoMunchee), cranial-friendly aligner therapy, Invisalign First and Teen, and the full Growing Healthy Faces Program. For adults and young adults: NightLase laser therapy for snoring, oral appliances for TMD and sleep disorders, Invisalign, and cosmetic laser procedures including LipLase and SmoothLase. Every treatment plan is fully customized — we do not offer one-size-fits-all care.

Laser frenectomy is the gold standard in our practice because it is safer, more precise, and more effective than traditional surgical methods. Our dual-wavelength laser approach combines a surgical wavelength to release restrictive tissue with a non-surgical wavelength that simultaneously reduces pain, minimizes bleeding, decreases the risk of infection, and supports faster healing. There are no stitches required and the procedure is typically completed in minutes. Patients — even infants — tolerate it exceptionally well. Dr. Lynda Dean-Duru is one of the most extensively trained and experienced laser frenectomy providers in the Greater Washington area, with over 20 years of laser dentistry experience.

Our entire philosophy is built around minimally invasive, comfort-first care. For most of our treatments — including BabyLase, Oralase, myofunctional therapy, and growth guidance appliances — there is no pain involved. Laser frenectomy procedures are performed with local anesthesia, and most patients report minimal discomfort during and after. For infants, we use the gentlest approach possible and encourage immediate breastfeeding or feeding afterward for comfort and healing. For children who need additional support, we offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and, for more extensive procedures, IV sedation administered by a board-certified pediatric anesthesiologist.

Yes — and for many of our patients, improving sleep is one of the most life-changing outcomes of treatment. Sleep-disordered breathing, snoring, and obstructive sleep apnea are directly connected to the structure and function of the airway, jaw, tongue, and soft tissue. Our treatments — including myofunctional therapy, growth guidance appliances, NightLase, oral appliances, and frenectomy — work together to open the airway, improve breathing patterns, and restore restorative sleep. We use home sleep screening devices to assess the severity of sleep-disordered breathing and collaborate with sleep physicians when a more comprehensive sleep study is needed.

It affects everything. The mouth, jaw, and airway are directly connected to how the brain functions, how the body grows, how well a person sleeps, how effectively they breathe, and how they regulate mood, focus, and energy. Untreated airway issues have been linked to ADHD-like behavioral patterns, chronic fatigue, anxiety, poor academic and athletic performance, cardiovascular strain, and metabolic dysfunction. A restricted tongue tie that goes unaddressed in infancy can affect feeding, speech, facial growth, sleep, and posture for decades. We look at the whole person — structure, function, behavior, nutrition, neurology, and posture — because that is the only way to create lasting change.

We do not participate directly with dental or medical insurance plans. We are an out-of-network specialty practice, which means our doctors can provide care based on clinical expertise rather than what insurance will approve. We submit all claims as a courtesy on your behalf, and you are reimbursed directly by your insurance based on your out-of-network benefits. Many of our services are also HSA and FSA eligible. Lab tests, when ordered, are often billable directly to insurance. Because every care plan is fully personalized, we are not able to provide an exact cost until after your evaluation. Our team will always discuss financial estimates with you before any treatment begins, and we offer flexible payment options to help families make care accessible.

We want to be upfront about this because it matters for your outcomes. The first 3 to 6 months of active treatment are typically hands-on and require in-person visits at our Ashburn, Virginia office. Many of our core services — including imaging, laser therapies, appliance fittings, myofunctional therapy, and procedural care — must be done in person for the best results. That said, we incorporate a hybrid approach where appropriate, and certain consultations and follow-ups can be done virtually. We work with families who travel to see us regularly and do our best to accommodate distance scheduling. If you are not local, reach out — we will have an honest conversation about whether the in-person commitment is realistic for your family before you take the next step.

No referral is needed. You are welcome to contact us directly to schedule a discovery call. Many of our families come to us through Google searches, word of mouth, or recommendations from other healthcare providers — but you do not need a referral from a physician or dentist to be seen. If you have existing records, imaging, or notes from other providers, we welcome those and encourage you to share them ahead of your visit so our doctors can review your full history.

Yes — and you are not alone in hearing this. Many of the patterns we identify and treat every day are simply not part of standard pediatric or general dentistry screening. Airway development, myofunctional dysfunction, restricted oral tissues, and craniofacial growth concerns require specialized training and tools to identify accurately — tools and expertise that most general providers do not have. We deeply respect primary care physicians and work collaboratively with them, but our scope of assessment is different. If your instincts are telling you something is off — whether it’s your child’s breathing, sleep, behavior, development, or feeding — those instincts are worth exploring. That is exactly what our discovery call and comprehensive assessment are designed for.
